Gulf Air expands fleet with Embraer regional jets

Gulf Air has taken delivery of two E170 regional jets from Embraer on a three-year lease agreement, with the option to extend for a further five years. The airline will deploy the new E170 AR jets on routes including Larnaca (Cyprus), Istanbul, Athens, Erbil, Baghdad and Muscat.

The first E170 flight was on 8 March, from Bahrain to Larnaca. The 67-seat aircraft features a Falcon Gold cabin with seven seats at 36in pitch, and an economy-class cabin with 31in seat pitch. PC power outlets are offered in Falcon Gold. As well as all-leather upholstered seating and no middle seats, the aircraft boasts in-seat IFE at every seat, with a choice of over 3,000 video titles and audio channels featuring a wide range of movies, music, news and documentaries in Arabic, English and several international languages.

“My aim is for Gulf Air to serve every Arab capital with at least a double daily service,” said Samer Majali, chief executive officer of Gulf Air. “This objective can become a reality thanks to the size, reliability, comfort and unbeatable economics of regional jets like the E170 AR.”

The two E170s will enable the airline to launch an expanded summer schedule for 2010, the details of which will be announced shortly. In parallel to the fast-track introduction of the two leased E170s, Gulf Air will be carrying out a full analysis and evaluation of all the regional jets on the market before deciding on the optimal regional jet type to join the fleet permanently.
