Recaro's BL3520 seat scoops another design award

Recaro Aircraft Seating won the top prize in the Transport/Traffic category at this year’s Focus Open – International Design Award Baden-Wuerttemberg competition, for its BL3520 economy-class seat.

“This award is widely recognised in the design community and clearly shows us that we have created a product that is consistent in many respects – not only in terms of quality, lightweight engineering and passenger comfort, but also in design,” said Axel Kahsnitz, CEO of Recaro Aircraft Seating. “Our engineering department focuses on ‘ingenious design’ with a strong emphasis on functionality, ergonomics and customer benefits.”

BL3520 is Recaro’s latest seat for the short-haul economy-class sector, and has been in use since late 2010 on aircraft operated by various Lufthansa Group airlines. Recaro says the seat boasts reduced weight, more comfort and more living space; and that a leaner backrest combined with patented solutions (including a literature pocket placed in a higher position) enables airlines to add extra seat rows.

This year 357 products were submitted in various categories for the Focus Design Award. The judging panel evaluated the products based on criteria ranging from design and ergonomics to functionality and emotional impact. All winning products are on display until 27 November 2011 in the Design Center Stuttgart exhibition at the Werkzentrum Weststadt in Ludwigsburg, Germany. Recaro’s BL3520 also won the Industrial Design/Interior Concept category in this year’s Crystal Cabin Awards.
