STG enters LED lighting venture with Swiss

STG Aerospace has revealed the first in a planned range of new lighting designs, an aftermarket LED cabin lighting system for Avro RJ 100 aircraft. The long-life LED units directly replace conventional fluorescent tubes which have to be renewed frequently.

The system, called the WhiteHawk, is claimed to offer the first ever ‘swap-out/swap-in’ solution for an LED system which, until now, has proven expensive to retrofit. Swiss International Air Lines has become the first customer.

WhiteHawk, say its makers, requires no modification to the existing ballast units or lamp holders. The installation is carried out by simply replacing fluorescent tubes with WhiteHawk LED tubes, meaning the benefits of LED are accessible to any airline.

For operators, WhiteHawk offers the lower power consumption and increased reliability of an LED system with the added benefit of reducing the maintenance burden created by replacing fluorescent tubes. For passengers and crew, the LED lighting creates a better quality and consistency of light when compared to fluorescent lighting, offering better cabin ambience.

After a successful testing program on Swiss International Airlines’ Avro RJ100 fleet, the operator will become the launch customer for WhiteHawk, signing a deal for a full fleet retrofit.

György Filep, aircraft systems engineer at Swiss International Air Lines, said, “WhiteHawk is a real breakthrough in cabin lighting for us. We carried out a thorough evaluation of all available systems and were delighted with the reduction in maintenance burden and improved cabin appearance delivered by STG’s new cost-effective and much-needed product. WhiteHawk has already demonstrated that it can resolve our reliability issues, and has the added benefit of needing no modification”.

Richard Moore, STG Aerospace's chief executive added, “Our research showed that the conversion cost was a real barrier to airlines taking up LED lighting solutions. Yet many airlines want to upgrade the interiors of their current fleet to match the appeal of new aircraft. So we developed WhiteHawk to be an affordable, retro-fit LED solution. We welcome Swiss International Air lines as our first customer.”
