Digital widescreen IFE for every Emirates passenger

Emirates has upgraded the hardware on its new Boeing 777 fleet to bigger, much wider, and digitally-enhanced screens for its 'ICE' (Information, Communication and Entertainment) IFE system, bringing it to every seat in every class.

Passengers will now be able to enjoy entertainment with wider personal screens: 27in in First Class, 20in in Business Class (pictured left) and 12.1in in Economy Class – an increase from the 10.9in screen – making the latter the biggest in the world. Additionally, the new screens feature HD resolution, developed by Panasonic Avionics Corporation (Panasonic), making it one of the world’s first commercial airlines to install such state-of-the-art technology.

The hardware will complement Emirates' new, enhanced GUI, developed in conjunction with Emirates, which was recently launched and designed specifically to make content and system features easier to navigate. ice Digital Widescreen offers a choice of over 1,300 channels of entertainment, including over 300 movies from around the world, hundreds of TV choices and thousands of music tracks from contemporary to classical.

The unique GUI includes a wide range of advanced capabilities, including the ability to move around the entertainment system by “swiping” or “scrolling”, just like a consumer tablet device; sending SMS and email messages; exploring the moving map application; watching the in-flight landscape cameras; and accessing live text news.

Right: The new screens set a new standard for economy class IFE

The enhanced screens and GUI will be introduced on all new Boeing 777 joining the Emirates fleet and subsequently over the next year on Emirates’ A380 aircraft.

“Emirates’ goal is to ensure maximum comfort and choice for passengers during their in-flight entertainment, communications and inflight experience,” said Adel Al Redha, Emirates' executive vice president of operations and engineering. “In this, like other areas of its operation, Emirates seeks to lead the industry; enabling our customers to get the very most out of their Emirates journey.”
