More details emerge about the Airbus Extra Wide Seat
Following its low-key reveal at Aircraft Interiors Expo 2012 in March, details of the latest concept in single-aisle economy seating have been scarce. However, now Suzana Hrnkova, Airbus's head of aircraft interiors marketing, has revealed not only the latest design, but also that it will be in flight with a customer within the next 18 months.
The A320 aircraft is known for its width, allowing for 18in-wide economy seats. However, Airbus came up with the idea of making two seats in a triple an inch narrower and adding those inches to the aisle seat. Hence the name the seat has been known by: the 17-17-20, though it now goes under the name of the Extra Wide Seat. The beauty of the design is that not only is a seat created in the economy cabin that can be sold for a higher fare, but the other two seats are only reduced to the standard width of a Boeing 737 economy seat. The seat has been developed in cooperation with B/E Aerospace.
