Airbus proposes daring twin-fuselage design
Large aircraft such as the Airbus A380 are great for revenue, and for getting more passengers through ever-busier airports. However, in 2008, Airbus applied for a patent on a design that could be capable of transporting far more passengers than the A380, and that adds a whole new dimension to air travel.
The patent, which has just been granted by the US Patent Office, is for a dual-fuselage design with two sets of wings, powered by a turboprop engine. Credited to Richard Wilby from the Airbus Future Projects division, the design could open up new possibilities for aircraft cabin design, for example with one fuselage for premium passengers and the other for economy, while cargo operations would also benefit. In addition, the dual-fuselage design would be lighter and more fuel-efficient than flying two aircraft with the same fuselages.
