BA book recalls the glamour of air travel
British Airways has been working hard to organise its extensive collection of archive material, and is now showcasing the historic glamour of flying with a new book, 'British Aviation Posters: Art, Design and Flight'.
The posters shown in the book, which date from the pre-war days of Imperial Airways, were originally designed to entice the wealthy of the day to take up flying with attractive images of exotic locations, luxury travel and cutting-edge art and graphics. The book also moves forward through to BOAC and modern campaigns.
Authors Scott Anthony and Oliver Green begin the story with circus-like air shows and exhibitions of the early pioneers of flight, then guide readers through historic milestones including post-war, the swinging sixties and the age of Concorde.
Paul Jarvis, curator of the British Airways Heritage Collection, said: “It’s incredible to see the years of history we have stored in our collection so beautifully presented for everybody to enjoy. The book captures the magic of flying and the incredible history behind British aviation, of which we’re so proud.”
Members of the public can also see a selection of the original artworks at the British Airways Speedbird Centre at British Airways’ Heathrow headquarters. The Speedbird Centre is a museum comprising unique items from British Airways’ history, which includes everything from uniforms to Royal memorabilia, menus and aircraft models to interiors.
Aircraft Interiors International enjoyed a tour of the centre, and images will follow soon, together with a review of the book.
In the meantime, here are a few posters from the book to whet your appetite:
