JPA Design’s concept for sustainable soft products

Global multidisciplinary design studio, JPA Design, has collaborated with PTP (Plane Talking Products), a supplier of soft products to airlines, to rethink how plastic packaging waste could be reduced in premium economy and business class amenities.

All imagery courtesy of JPA Design, photography by Richard Boll.

For premium economy cabins, JPA Design and PTP developed a blanket that is neatly tied and attached to the seat’s backrest dress cover, eliminating the need for plastic packaging
Hanging the blanket from the seatback frees-up space on the seat during boarding

A simple means of keeping the blanket rolled up, as well as a hanging mechanism
The blanket is ready to be unfurled, with no plastics to unwrap
Once unfolded, the blanket reveals a generous drawstring pocket that holds the pillow
There is also a smaller, fully enclosed pocket designed to keep personal items like smartphones secure and
within easy reach while the blanket is in use
The option for business class is an ‘unwrappable’ mattress cover, secured with an elegant bow inspired by  fashion
Untie the bow and inflight comfort awaits
Without plastic packaging, the blanket looks more like a hotel item than an airline item – in a good way
The blanket and mattress topper for business class
The mattress topper features magnets that connect with the seat’s dress cover
With the magnets securing the mattress to the seat dress cover, a stable and comfortable sleeping surface is created
JPA Design has personalised its approach to creating amenity items by moving away from
one-size-fits-all kits, emphasising the human touch of crew interaction. Cabin crew would offer a selection of products for passengers to choose from, reducing the environmental impact of unnecessary
items
Once passengers make their selections, they are able to store them in a practical bag
that can be hung on a coat or headphones hook, keeping the passenger seat space tidy and clutter-free
