Muirhead develops hygienic aviation leathers

In response to increasing demand for hygiene measures in the cabin, Muirhead, a Scotland-based leather producer, is launching a new hygienic and sustainable leather range for aircraft seat covers. The leather, named Active Hygiene Leather, has built-in self-cleaning properties, enabled through a partnership with Sweden-based Polygiene and its ViralOff treatment.

According to Polygiene, ViralOff can break down more than 99% viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, H3N2 and H1N1 within two hours of contact, and also boasts antimicrobial and odour removal properties. ViralOff is permanently integrated into the Active Hygiene Leather during the production process at Muirhead’s facilities.

“We are pleased to offer Muirhead Active Hygiene Leather with Polygiene ViralOff to take seat hygiene to a new level and play a key role in setting new standards in cabin wellness. The team at Muirhead are working closely with airlines, design studios and aircraft manufacturers to create interiors solutions for the future of travel and transportation”, stated Archie Browning, sales director at Muirhead.
