Two cabin product designs by Lufthansa Technik have been successful in the 2024 Red Dot Design Awards, the annual international design competition that recognises the best product design, communication design and design concepts. The awards ceremony will be held in Singapore in October.

Lufthansa Technik was successful with its Omni-Fi speaker technology, which is among the winners in the ‘Best of the Best: Design Concept’ category, and with its CelestialStar VIP design concept for the BBJ 777-9, which won an awarded in the Product Design category.

Lufthansa Technik’s compact Omni-Fi cabin speaker technology

The Omni-Fi speaker hardware for VIP and business jet cabins is compact and discreet, with an installation depth of less than 20mm and a weight of less than 300g (<0.6lb) – Lufthansa Technik says this is 50% lighter than some cabin speaker systems. The compact and sleek form factor is enabled by an exclusively licenced Ring-mode converter/transducer technology with optimal omnidirectional dispersion, which provides an immersive audio experience, and also benefits cabin designers.

The second winner, the CelestialStar VIP design for the BBJ 777-9, is designed for maximum space and comfort, in the cabin, incorporating traditional elements of Middle Eastern cultural heritage with a modern twist. The cabin features a special light and window shade concept designed to give passengers the feeling of being in a living room rather than on an aircraft.

“The Red Dot Design Award is one of the world’s most renowned design competitions and honours the best in design and business,” said Andrew Muirhead, vice president of OEM and engineering services at Lufthansa Technik, and head of its Original Equipment & Special Aircraft Services segment. “We feel very honoured that we were able to convince the jury with two of our outstanding products. Winning these awards not only signifies the highest level of design expertise, but also underscores our company’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and quality in product design, and sets a benchmark for future innovations.”
