Rosen Aviation develops 4K IFE and smart map device

Rosen Aviation's 4K Smart Map Box is a simple upgrade path to a more modern passenger experience

Rosen Aviation, a US-based IFE and cabin electronics supplier, has launched the all-in-one ‘4K Smart Map Box’. This standalone peripheral device combines smart TV functionality with the FlightPath3D 4K moving map system, in a single, compact unit that the company says can be paired with most aviation displays, in any IFE/CMS ecosystem.

According to Rosen the 4K Smart Map Box is cost-effective, easy to integrate, and is suitable for aircraft of all sizes and capacity. Rosen has offered moving map systems for more than 20 years, including the LX, VX and MX product lines. This latest technology is designed to be equally suitable for installation in retrofits and new completions, allowing operators to scale new and existing aircraft cabins to incorporate contemporary functions such as IFE content streaming and app hosting, in addition to the FlightPath3D 4K moving map.

Rosen Aviation says the 4K Smart Map Box will be certified by the Google Play Store to open access to a range of apps such as Netflix, YouTub and Hulu, and will also be Widevine Level 1 certified to enable access to the latest DRM (Digital Rights Management) studio content. The smart box, a line-replaceable unit (LRU), features dual HDMI outputs, USB input, S/PDIF and analogue audio outputs, Bluetooth audio, wired Gb ethernet, wi-fi connectivity, and 1TB of internal storage.

Lee Clark, senior vice-president of strategy at Rosen Aviation said of the technology, “It is so rewarding to see the evolution of our technology portfolio, as it quickly expands to meet the everchanging landscape of consumer electronics. Our goal is to bridge the gap between what’s available on an aircraft with what passengers have available at home, on their phones, and in their cars.

“The 4K Smart Map Box undoubtedly achieves that goal. While this announcement is both exciting and impactful, it’s really one of many new solutions that Rosen is bringing to market that dramatically enhances the passenger experience beyond just better display resolution, and we will continue to innovate and push the boundaries of what’s possible in an aircraft cabin.”

Rosen Aviation is taking bookings for demonstrations of the 4K Smart Map Box at Aircraft Interiors Expo in April.
