Boeing 747-8 joins the Ka-band

0

Lufthansa Technik has been appointed by an undisclosed customer to equip several Boeing 747-8 aircraft with Ka-band broadband Internet from 2018 onwards. This contract makes Lufthansa Technik the world’s first MRO provider to offer modifications for this aircraft type.

The company says it only requires a maximum of four days to modify a classic aircraft with the antennas and routers necessary to enable broadband connectivity. This rapid fitment has been made possible by minimizing the required intervention in the aircraft structure; a further benefit of this approach is that future modifications to the setup, or even its complete removal in the event of technology changes, can be carried out without costly intervention in the structure.
