ThinKom Solutions has secured type approval for its terminals to be used for communications across Avanti Communications’ fleet of HYLAS Ka-band satellites. The agreement covers ThinKom’s low-drag ThinAir Ka2517 antenna for commercial aviation, as well as its GT 2517 full-spectrum terminal, designed for government and military services.

Avanti’s fleet of four HYLAS satellites offer 50Ghz capacity and coverage claimed to enable service to more than 1.7 billion people in 118 countries. Avanti has more than 100 fixed beams, five steerable beams, and a steerable cluster of eight beams, delivering services across EMEA, Asia and the Americas. The UK-based company has a history of supporting government and defence customers, and is a provider of satellite communications (SATCOM) to government agencies around the world, including the US and UK.

ThinKom says its ThinAir terminals will deliver strong throughput on the forward and return links across Avanti’s high-throughput beams, enabling. This capability allows real-time data and communications and enables another layer of Ka-band coverage redundancy for commercial and government missions.
