The BoardConnect wireless IFE system is becoming ever more popular with passengers, according to its creator, Lufthansa Systems. July 3, 2014, saw the BoardConnect app downloaded from the Internet for the one-millionth time. The app enables passengers to access a wide range of entertainment and information during a flight on their own smartphones, tablets or laptops.

BoardConnect is a wi-fi-based IFE platform that does away with the need for embedded seatback screens and instead streams video and audio content from an on-board server to mobile devices. The system also enables full access to the Internet through a broadband connection.

The app can be customised in the respective airline’s corporate design and passengers can access the latest movies, video and audio channels, infotainment, games, and personalised information about connecting flights or frequent flyer mileage status. Passengers can also choose their meals, send beverage requests to the crew and order items from the on-board shop.

Norbert Müller, SVP for BoardConnect at Lufthansa Systems, said, “The fact that our app has been downloaded one million times shows us that BoardConnect is being embraced by passengers worldwide. More and more passengers want to enjoy in-flight entertainment on their own smartphone, tablet or laptop.”
