One of the most exciting initiatives in the aircraft interiors sector is preparing to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Since the annual Crystal Cabin Award was launched in 2007 by the Hamburg Aviation cluster, its judging panel has assessed and celebrated hundreds of products, technologies and concepts that represent the state of the art and potential for the future air passenger experience.
The awards scheme recognises excellence in creating products and concepts that enhance the inflight experience, from seating to galleys, to cabin design, inflight entertainment & connectivity (IFEC), lighting, sustainability, and accessibility.

The organisers of the Crystal Cabin Award have now opened the submissions process for the 2027 competition, with applications welcome across the eight award categories: Accessibility, Breakthrough Start-ups, Cabin Concepts, Cabin Technologies, IFEC & Digital Services, Passenger Comfort, Sustainable Cabin, and University.
“The vibrant history of the Crystal Cabin Award shows that cabin innovation is not only about what an aircraft interior looks and feels like; it is also about the barriers removed, the resources saved, and the problems solved, all in the service of the best passenger experience,” stated Angela Wockert, project manager for the Crystal Cabin Award Association, which organises the awards.
“Over the last 20 years, the award has gone from strength to strength because it has unerringly identified trends, honoured creative solutions, and shone a spotlight on excellence passengers might not even see or experience directly. We aim to carry on this tradition while working together with our partners and sponsors to lift the award to new heights looking forward,” she added.
How does the application process work?
The submissions window for the 2027 competition is now open, with a deadline of 21 November 2026. Companies, designers, researchers and students are invited to submit their products, technologies and concepts that enhance the passenger experience of today or tomorrow.
Applicants can apply to be considered in one or more of the eight awards categories:
Accessibility
This category recognises innovations that improve accessibility in the aircraft cabin, creating a more inclusive and comfortable experience for all passengers, including those with disabilities or reduced mobility. Submissions can include advances in seating, lavatories, cabin layout, assistive technologies, or other design elements that remove barriers and enable equal access to air travel.
Breakthrough Start-ups
This category is dedicated to young companies that bring fresh ideas, bold concepts, and innovative technologies to the aviation industry. Eligible participants are start-ups that were founded no more than seven years ago.
Submissions can include products and concepts across any area of the aviation industry, provided they demonstrate a high degree of innovation, creativity, and impact. The focus is on visionary approaches that challenge the status quo and open new perspectives for airlines, manufacturers, suppliers, or passengers.
Cabin Concepts
Dedicated to complete cabin concepts that are already in existence or at a market-ready stage, this category includes products that integrate multiple elements into a coherent overall product, using design and technology to elevate the passenger experience. This category is open to airlines, manufacturers, and design companies.
Cabin Technologies
This category encompasses individual technical components, materials or products that deliver benefits to airlines and/or passengers, such as galleys, lavatories, trolleys, air-conditioning, electrical systems, safety devices, waste and potable water systems, acoustics, etc.
Note that complete digital systems should be entered into the IFEC & Digital Cabin Systems category, and solutions primarily aimed at passenger comfort should be entered in the Passenger Comfort category.
IFEC & Digital Services
The category rewards innovations in in-flight entertainment (IFE), in-flight connectivity (IFC) and digital cabin systems that advance the vision of a truly connected cabin. Eligible submissions include next-generation entertainment platforms, connectivity solutions such as antennas and wi-fi, and digital services that enhance the passenger journey or airline operations.
The scope also covers integrated software concepts for a ‘smart cabin’, leveraging data, automation, and connectivity.
Passenger Comfort
Passenger comfort is a decisive factor for airline success. Entries in this category must clearly demonstrate how they improve the onboard experience for a broad range of travellers. Solutions with a wide impact are more likely to impress the jury. Eligible innovations include hardware such as seating, overhead bins, partitions, and other cabin elements designed to enhance comfort.
Sustainable Cabin
The aviation industry has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Reaching this goal demands innovation across all aspects of air travel, including the cabin and passenger experience. At the same time, travellers are increasingly concerned about sustainability, putting additional pressure on airlines and manufacturers to act.
The Sustainable Cabin category honours entries that make a demonstrable contribution to reducing aviation’s environmental footprint and accelerating the transformation toward climate-neutral air travel.
University
This category invites college and university students to share their visions for innovative products and concepts in aircraft interiors. Obviously students are not yet experts in the aviation sector, so the emphasis is on forward-thinking ideas that deliver genuine value and impact, while questions of feasibility, certification, or technical implementation play only a minor role in the evaluation.
The judging panel is keen to see creative ideas, but students do not have to fear a grilling about the complexities of engineering.
Participation the Crystal Cabin Award offers students valuable exposure and the chance to build important connections within the industry, opening doors for their future careers.
You can find everything you need to apply on the Crystal Cabin Award website.

The next stage
After the submissions window for the 2027 competition closes on 21 November 2026, an initial evaluation is carried out to ensure all entries comply with the awards criteria. The shortlist is then drawn up and announced in mid-December.
The shortlisted entries are then evaluated by an independent 27-strong judging panel representing academia, engineering, airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and trade media. A voting process follows to decide the 24 finalists across the eight awards categories, which will be announced in February 2027.
Then next stage is to decide the winners. This will take place in Hamburg on 5th April, the day before the opening of Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX), and the eve of the awards ceremony, which will have a special 20th anniversary celebration.
The Crystal Cabin Award and APEX
A separate initiative, the Seamless Journey Award, developed together with the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX), will be presented in Singapore on 19th November 2026 during APEX FTE Expo.
The Seamless Journey Award recognises innovations that connect the aircraft cabin with the wider passenger journey. This distinction has its own application and selection process and is separate from the main Crystal Cabin Award competition. You can find out more about the Seamless Journey Award here.
