The application window for the Crystal Cabin Award, the prestigious honour for innovation in the aircraft cabin, is now open. The organisers of the initiative, the Crystal Cabin Award Association, occasionally adjust or add categories to reflect trends and advances in the passenger experience sector, and for 2026 a new category has been added.
The new category, ‘Breakthrough Start-Ups’, is a great opportunity for young companies to submit their ideas for the future of flight, for evaluation by a panel of industry experts. The category is perfect for new companies with bold ideas, visionary approaches, and innovative technologies that rethink air travel – whether for passengers, airlines, OEMs, or suppliers. The category is open to start-ups that have been operating for no more than seven years.
Eight categories of innovation
Breakthrough Start-Ups is one of eight categories in the 2026 Crystal Cabin Award. The categories span key themes of the aviation industry, from sustainable flight to accessible cabins, digital services to visionary concepts.
Sustainable Cabin
Aviation has committed to net-zero emissions by 2050. Achieving this goal requires innovation across the board, including in the aircraft cabin. This category recognises ideas that measurably reduce the environmental footprint of aviation and accelerate the transition to climate-neutral flight.
Accessibility
This category rewards solutions that make flying easier and more comfortable for passengers with disabilities, from accessible seating and lavatory solutions, to new cabin layouts and assistive technologies.
IFEC & Digital Systems
From smarter inflight entertainment to the connected cabin, this category recognises digital innovations such as inflight entertainment (IFE) platforms, inflight connectivity (IFC) solutions, and integrated software concepts that enhance both the passenger experience and airline operations.
Passenger Comfort
Seats, overhead bins, lighting, and more: this category is for innovations that noticeably improve comfort levels in air travel, especially when they benefit a broad range of passengers.
Cabin Technologies
This category focuses on individual technical components such as galleys, lavatories, environmental control systems, safety systems, or waste and potable water systems, that deliver clear advantages for airlines and/or passengers.
Cabin Concepts
This category recognises complete cabin concepts that combine multiple elements into a coherent overall inflight experience, from premium cabins to visionary design solutions.
University
Students worldwide can also present their ideas for the cabin of the future. The focus is on innovative concepts with real added value, and while some degree of realistic future application is expected, technical readiness is not.
Breakthrough Start-Ups
As mentioned above, this category is for start-up companies no older than seven years old. The panel welcomes bold concepts, innovative technologies and visionary approaches that challenge the status quo in aviation and open new perspectives for airlines, manufacturers, suppliers or passengers.
The next steps
Companies, institutions, and students can now make their submissions for the Crystal Cabin Award 2026 at www.application.crystal-cabin-award.com. The application deadline is 15th November, 2025.
After the deadline, all valid submissions will be evaluated in a multi-stage process by an international jury of 27 industry experts. Following a voting round, the finalists will be announced in spring 2026, and the winners decided after another round of voting.
The Crystal Cabin Award prize-giving ceremony will take place on 14th April, 2026, during Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg.
Early bird discount

Applicants have the opportunity to benefit from an early bird discount. Participants who submit their application by 5th October, 2025 are eligible for a reduced participation fee of €280. After that date, the submission fee will be €380. Students are exempt from the fee.
