Delta Air Lines’ commitment to accessible air travel

On Friday, 2nd October, the aviation industry marked an important milestone: the 40th anniversary of the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), a landmark piece of legislation that helped transform air travel for millions of people with disabilities. The impact of this legislation can be seen every day across airports, on aircraft and in the experiences of customers.

At Delta, the anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on how far the industry has come, but also on the continued evolution of accessible travel. Delta recognises the needs and preferences of customers with disabilities are dynamic, and as new technologies emerge, the airline continues to expand options that support greater dignity, independence and choice throughout the travel experience.

“Accessibility is ultimately about connecting people to the moments and opportunities that matter most,” said Brad Sheehan, Delta’s SVP, corporate safety security and compliance. “The ACAA helped transform what air travel could look like for customers with disabilities, and we’re proud to continue building on that legacy through innovation, listening and the extraordinary care our people provide every day.”

Listening, learning and leading

A key part of Delta’s accessibility journey has been listening directly to customers with disabilities.

Nearly three decades ago, Delta became the first U.S. carrier to establish an Advisory Board on Disability and Accessible Travel, creating a formal partnership comprised of frequent fliers with a wide range of disability-related expertise who lend their insights to help improve the travel experience for all customers.

Board member and senior lecturer at Florida State University,  Dr James “JR” Harding, believes the group’s impact extends beyond any single initiative. “The greatest legacy of this Advisory Board will not be found in policies, procedures or museum exhibits,” he stated. “It will be found in the cultural shift that brought leaders, divisions, employees and customers together in new ways.”

For JR, the impact is personal. “Delta gave me access to a world that might otherwise have remained out of reach,” he said.

Feedback from JR and other board members has helped inform everything from employee training to accessibility enhancements across Delta’s travel experience, ensuring innovations are developed with customers, not just for them.

Continuing to raise the bar

While Delta is proud of the progress made over the last 40 years, the work is far from finished.

Guided by customer and employee feedback, and input from the Advisory Board, Delta continues to invest in innovations designed to make travel more accessible and comfortable.

Recent and upcoming enhancements include:

  • Introducing tactile seat controls on Delta One seats, tactile lavatory features, and a dedicated wheelchair accessible lavatory on select new aircraft to support customers with visual, mobility, and dexterity  disabilities.
  • Providing 100% English closed-captioned inflight entertainment (IFE) content along with expanded audio-descriptive programming.
  • Displaying important inflight announcements on seatback screens to support customers who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Expanding digital accessibility tools on Delta.com and the Fly Delta app, including the ability for customers to communicate accessibility needs and provide details about mobility devices.

Looking ahead

While technology and product enhancements play an important role, accessibility ultimately comes to life through Delta people. From White Glove specialists and Airport Customer Service teams to In-Flight Services and Tech Ops, employees across the operation help ensure customers with disabilities travel with confidence, dignity and independence.

Forty years after the passage of the ACAA, Delta remains focused on the future of accessible travel. Guided by the expertise of the Advisory Board, customer feedback and the dedication of Delta people, Delta will continue working toward a world where air travel is accessible and seamless for all.

October also marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a reminder of the importance of accessibility, inclusion and removing barriers to opportunity, both in the workplace and throughout the travel experience.
