ZIM's modular The Frame seat uses genuine wood in its structure

ZIM Aircraft Seating Group, a Germany-based designer and manufacturer of aircraft seating, has won a Red Dot Award for the design of The Frame, its newest premium economy seat concept.

The Frame, which was awarded in the Design Concept category, features a lightweight architecture and reduces the use of plastics by incorporating renewable, recyclable, and reusable materials, including real wood, to help advance circular design principles.

The modular design also enables quick and safe interchangeability of components for upgrades, redesigns, and mid-life refreshes, cutting downtime and extending product lifecycle.

The unique wooden frame is intended to give the design a natural and sophisticated aesthetic, while features such as the newly developed kinematic system help achieve long-haul comfort.

“Innovation is not just about adopting the latest technology; it is about completely redefining what is possible in our industry,” said Albert Bopp, head of R&D at ZIM Aircraft Seating Group. “This award is a testament to our team’s ability to anticipate future challenges and engineer a groundbreaking solution that seamlessly bridges visionary science with an intuitive, customer-first experience.”

The Frame also achieved finalist status in the Sustainable Cabin category of the 2026 Crystal Cabin Awards.
