Following analysis of trends in its onboard sales of duty-free goods in recent years, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has noted that purchasing behaviour had changed. Fewer customers are making purchases during flights, with many now preferring to research the available products ahead of the flight, compare prices online, and make their duty-free purchases before they even arrive at the airport.
As the airline noted, “The spontaneous purchase from the onboard duty-free trolley has become the exception”. In response, SWISS is discontinuing inflight duty-free sales at the end of September 2026 (onboard food and beverage offerings will continue).
The current inflight sales catalogue, featuring items such as watches, jewellery, perfumes, cosmetics and accessories, will remain valid until 30th September. From June onward, SWISS will offer selected items from the remaining stock with discounts starting at 25%. After that, SWISS intends to discontinue duty-free sales entirely.
Customers will be able to purchase selected products from today’s duty-free catalogue online via the existing ‘Worldshop’ of Miles & More. There are a few treats for aviation enthusiasts, such as SWISS branded mugs, luggage and aircraft models, as well as the ‘SWISS Recraft Collection’of exclusive furniture pieces and accessories made from decommissioned SWISS aircraft.
