Airline Allies initiative launches to make aircraft cabins more sustainable

The Green Cabin Alliance (GCA) has today launched Airline Allies, an initiative designed to help airlines collaborate with GCA’s existing membership base of aircraft interior specialists and supplier to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable and circular aircraft cabins. Boeing and Airbus are also part of the GCA advisory board, and the inclusion of airlines will complete the circle of stakeholders.

GCA is inviting airlines to become members of Airline Allies and work alongside the GCA’s existing membership base of manufacturers, suppliers, designers, material innovators and other industry stakeholders to tackle the challenges involved in making cabins more sustainable.

GCA says that while the aviation industry has made significant progress in reducing operational emissions through measures such as fleet renewal programmes, the introduction of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and initiatives to improve operational efficiencies, the sustainability aspects of the cabin remain ‘a largely untapped opportunity’.

The GCA notes that decisions concerning materials, waste management, refurbishment and end-of-life recycling are often fragmented across the aircraft cabin interiors supply chain, and that meaningful progress is difficult to achieve in isolation rather than as a broader approach.

GCA’s Airline Allies initiative aims to address this fragmentation by giving airlines a central role in shaping practical solutions that reflect real operational requirements in the cabin while also encouraging greater collaboration across the aviation ecosystem.

Elina Kopola, founder of the Green Cabin Alliance

“The aviation industry has made enormous progress in tackling operational emissions, but the aircraft cabin represents one of the biggest remaining opportunities to improve sustainability,” commented Elina Kopola, founder of Green Cabin Alliance. “Every journey begins and ends in the cabin, yet many of the challenges surrounding materials, waste and circularity cannot be solved by airlines working alone.”

Airline Allies members can participate in ‘Working Group Sprints’, where airlines and industry partners meet to collaborate and identify shared challenges, exchange expertise, and develop practical, scalable solutions for sustainability that can be adopted across the industry.

Airlines members can also gain access to industry insights, sustainability benchmarking data, and news about emerging technologies and materials, and have the opportunity to collaborate directly with suppliers, OEMs and recycling specialists. The initiative also aims to help airlines translate their ambitious sustainability goals into measurable action across cabin operations while strengthening procurement decisions, reducing waste, and supporting long-term ESG objectives.

“Airline Allies gives airlines the opportunity to help shape practical, industry-wide solutions alongside the organisations designing, manufacturing and maintaining tomorrow’s aircraft cabins,” added Kopola. “By bringing the right stakeholders together, we can accelerate innovation, reduce duplication of effort, and make sustainable cabin design a standard part of the aviation industry.”

Membership of Airline Allies is open to airlines of any size – the GCA just asks that participants contribute operational insights, share their challenges, and collaborate on solutions that can benefit the wider industry.

Airlines interested in joining Airline Allies can find more details via GCA, or register their interest by emailing joinus@greencabinalliance.org
