Lufthansa Technik (LHT) reports that it has completed the first Boeing 787 cabin modification at its European centre of excellence for widebody base maintenance services in Malta. The comprehensive cabin modifications, carried out for the Lufthansa airline, included the removal of existing cabin hardware, the installation of the new Allegris cabin and seating configuration, and a full upgrade of the cabin monuments.
In 2024, Boeing announced an agreement to designate Lufthansa Technik as the first Boeing Licenced Service Centre (BLSC) for cabin modifications on B787 Dreamliner aircraft, bringing additional choice and capacity to the market.
As a BLSC for B787 cabin modifications, Lufthansa Technik can design a new cabin interior, provide the associated engineering, and perform the integration in accordance with the customer’s specifications. Along with the licence granted by Boeing, Lufthansa Technik can cover certification of the modification projects. The cabin modifications on the B787 long-haul widebody are performed at Lufthansa Technik Malta.

This first Dreamliner programme was carried out in collaboration with Boeing, which contracted and supported the modification package, as well as with the operator, Lufthansa. LHT says the project featured “significant technical complexity”, including the conversion of a bay in the Malta facility to accommodate the increased space requirements of the B787, and involved substantial logistical efforts due to the replacement of an existing cabin with a new one. A further six cabin modifications of this type are scheduled to be completed in Malta during 2026.
“The 787 platform requires deep expertise, and our ability to deliver this project with precision and on time clearly demonstrates that we are ready to support even more widebody projects in the future,” said Marcus Motschenbacher, VP and COO for aircraft maintenance services at Lufthansa Technik.
“This collaboration between Boeing and Lufthansa Technik helps to expand post-delivery retrofit options for the 787 Dreamliner fleet,” added Lindsey Douglas, vice president, cabin, modifications, maintenance & digital services at Boeing. “As a Boeing Licensed Service Center, Lufthansa Technik will add vital capacity to deliver tailored cabin modifications that meet the unique needs of the flying fleet.”
A new hangar for 787 Dreamliner cabin modifications
Lufthansa Technik Malta is expanding its capacity. From the end of 2026, a new 6,400-square-metre hangar will be used to carry out base maintenance services, particularly cabin modifications on 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
The new building will provide space for one widebody aircraft, and three additional parking spots for narrowbody aircraft will also be established. With the addition of the new hangar, which will be attached to the existing buildings, Lufthansa Technik Malta will have a total of four hangars capable of carrying out MRO on nearly all commercial Airbus aircraft – except the A380 – as well as on the Boeing 787.
